DR. DENIS MUKWEGE ON 60 MINUTES, THIS SUNDAY JANUARY 13

This Sunday, Jan. 13, the CBS News program 60 Minutes will air a segment entitled - WAR AGAINST WOMEN. CNN's Anderson Cooper will report from the Democratic Republic of Congo where he will interview Panzi Hospital's Dr. Denis Mukwege about the systematic gender based violence currently occurring in the DRC. As the 60 Minutes website says, "...women are bearing the brunt of one of the horrible weapons used in the war: rape." Please check the website for local listings: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/60minutes/main3415.shtml

V-Day has been working with Dr. Mukwege for over a year, and in August 2007 V-Day and UNICEF launched "Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource, Power To The Women And Girls Of The Democratic Republic Of Congo," a campaign that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for The City of Joy, a project of Panzi Hospital in partnership with V-Day and UNICEF that will be a refuge for healed women, survivors of rape and torture who have been left without family and community. The City of Joy will offer a safe haven, providing educational and income-generating opportunities, and support women in becoming the next leaders of the DRC.
