“Love of self must be love of our true selves, not the pretend versions we’ve had to create in order to survive, not the false person we’ve created in order to exercise dominance, not the false self imposed on us by a cruel and exacting world. No love of the true self, the free self, the nourished and rested self, the liberated and liberating self. This is the kind of love that heals the world. This is fierce love.” – Rev. THE ONE BILLION RISING AFRICA COORDINATORS

Across Africa in March, One Billion Rising Activists are RISING for the Bodies of All Women, Girls & the Earth amplifying the 2022 global call to action. Led by Eswatini-based Colani Hlatjwako, director of One Billion Rising Africa (OBR Africa), and a team of Africa-based coordinators representing 20 countries on the continent including: Swaziland/Eswatini, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Togo, Ghana, Uganda, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Congo, Mozambique, Gabon, Namibia, Mali, Senegal, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, and Rwanda.

OBR Africa is part of the global campaign One Billion Rising– the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. One Billion Rising, which originally launched on Valentine’s Day 2013, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime, equaling more than one billion women and girls based on the current global population. One Billion Rising activists have unleashed vast grassroots, anti-violence actions locally, nationally and globally. This visionary work has been survivor-led and focused, all the while revealing the power of art and activism to change culture and systems.
