We are honoured to have V (formerly Eve Ensler) , Founder, One Billion Rising, award winning playwright and performer, and creator of V Day, launch the India Chapter of OBR this month with us. Her fascinating and critically acclaimed work has inspired us for years and is highly relevant in this ever-challenging political landscape. Her activism around gender and sexuality, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ and ‘The Apology’ have both stirred up vitally agonising discourses and has provided us immense catharsis as well. This session is also a chance to revive our connections and tend to ourselves holistically with fierce love and care. As...

October 28th in the Philippine is National Women’s Day of Protest, a historic event in 1983 that saw 10,000 women marching on the streets to demand democracy and rights amid the devastation brought of the Marcos dictatorship. Inspired by women’s show of unity and strength in the face of repression, several organizations and personalities formed the organization GABRIELA the following year. This year, GABRIELA chose October 28 to launch One Billion Rising (OBR) 2021, a global campaign demanding an end to violence against women and Mother Earth in its varied forms. Online and onsite dance protests and actions were spearheaded by...

When I was told that the theme for One Billion Rising 2021 was Rising Gardens, it just clicked. I'd been aching to connect with nature♡ This morning, OBR Singapore inaugurated the theme with a visit to the Green Up Singapore farm. I even got to plant a Moringa stem in the little OBR patch Lalitha Nair has allowed us to have! Thank you for all the wonderful teachings on farm to plate, screen to green, how to grow microgreens and the fabulous organic veggies. Our next trip is on 22nd Nov. Let's respect Mother Earth and along with Rising Gardens,...

One Billion Rising calls upon the Nigerian government to end SARS, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which has a brutal history of unlawful arrests, kidnapping, harassment, extortion and killings.  As the government sought to end two weeks of marches against police brutality that have mushroomed into broader nationwide demonstrations, thousands of Nigerians – spurred on by young people - have taken to the streets to protest SARS.  While the government announced Sunday that the unit was being disbanded, soldiers opened fire into protesting crowds in Lagos late Tuesday night.  News media are reporting that one person was killed and 30 people...

1 OCTOBER 2020 DEAR ACTIVISTS, A LETTER FROM V Tags: V-Day ■ Share Dearest Activists, I hope you have been holding up during these difficult but radicalizing times. This pandemic has revealed the inequalities and injustices that have plagued the world for hundreds of years. We see how nurses, domestic workers, farmers, mothers, restaurant workers, janitors, transportation workers, etc. – mainly women of color, who are literally saving our lives every day, have been the least protected, honored, valued and respected. We have seen in America and across the world the most hideous murders of Black men and women by the police, especially...

Take a peak at the One Billion Rising launches happening across the world.  The OBR 2021 theme is RISING GARDENS.The Covid-19 pandemic has rapidly blown open the destructive veins of neo-liberalism, capitalism, racism, fascism and patriarchy, revealing violent and broken systems that have been forced upon us for far too long. With each day, we see that the majority of people who are dying are those who have been historically exploited, oppressed, marginalized and discriminated against because of race, gender, class, caste. Across the planet, the majority of front line workers, health care workers, home care workers, domestic workers, and farmworkers...

These are challenging times for essential service workers, workers of color, and womxn-identifying workers and mothers especially. We write today to ask for your support for these frontline workers. Tipped service workers, including servers, bartenders, delivery workers, and more, are starting a series of monthly strikes this coming Monday, August 31, demanding a full minimum wage with tips on top, at a time when tips are down 50-75%. These workers’ subminimum wages have caused a horrific experience for them during this pandemic, as has also been the case for so many other essential workers in other sectors. At Monday’s rally, we...

We are thrilled to share the news that One Billion Rising Coordinator Rada Boric has been elected to the Croatian parliament! Rada is a member of the New Left party in Croatia and the We Can coalition, a Croatian platform of local green and progressive movements that formed a progressive political party and won seven seats in Sunday's parliamentary election. "We showed in the span of a month and a half what courage means - that's what we brought to the table from activism. We also showed what creativity and respect for people and talking to them can do," stated Rada...
