The team explained that “the women and children of these regions carry the heavy burden of war, poverty, illiteracy and ignorance.” Due to the lack of  water, these potentially healthy agricultural lands have become barren deserts, forcing the majority of the men from these provinces to migrate over the border to Iran to work and earn a living for their families. With very few healthcare centers within range, health issues among the...

As we approach the end of another year, we are once again filled with gratitude for this unique, ever-changing, and stunning movement. ON THE PRECIPICE OF OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY, through another pandemic year that rocked the world and illuminated intractable systems of inequity, and despite conflicts and upheaval that raged from Ukraine to Iran, Afghanistan to Ethiopia, V-Day and One Billion Rising activists once again shattered traditions and created spaces for grassroots dialogue, with art and activism at the forefront always. They rose for gender, climate, economic and racial justice and against a wave of war, right-wing nationalism, white supremacy, colorism,...

The 5th annual FreeHer conference brought together formerly incarcerated women and directly affected people. Activists, advocates, experts, policymakers, and supporters from across the country came to connect and share ideas and resources to work collectively toward ending the incarceration of women and girls and creating systems to empower themselves and their communities. Amidst increasing need, the Simeen mobile health team continues its work. Last month, the team visited the Logar province and the Parwan province in northern Afghanistan. They spent time in communities living in politically volatile conditions, subject to sporadic invasions and fighting caused by the Taliban. Most community members have little to no access to clean water, health care, stable housing, and education and most of the patients were pregnant or nursing mothers and children. Many children suffered from malnutrition and pneumonia. Female health team members gave knowledge and advice on hygiene, birth control, and COVID-19 care. The team was...
