One Billion Rising

(Reposted from onebillionrising.org) One Billion Rising stands in solidarity with the people of Eswatini in their call for Eswatini Leaders/ Government to engage in dialogue and not to deprive people their rights to freedom of expression. Shared from Eswatini activists: “There have been ongoing unrest and protests happening in Eswatini following the government barring the people of Eswatini the right to freedom of expression and unleash the police/military to intimidate and torture civilians. Eswatini is a land locked country in Southern Africa which is ruled by King Mswati 111 an absolute monarchy. We call for the King of Eswatini and the Government to stop...

As an advisory board member of Donna Hylton’s A Little Piece of Light, I was invited to attend the organization’s trip to touch base with their California partners. A Little Piece of Light is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower and facilitate healing for women, girls, and gender-fluid individuals who are directly impacted by trauma and involvement in the criminal justice system. Our flight was on time and we all settled in for the 6-hour trip. We were fully vaccinated and excited to be traveling again. We arrived, and LaVell Baylor, Deputy Director for Freedom4Youth, was there to greet...

The first PRIDE was not a parade, but a protest. The fight for justice continues in 2021, as police brutality disproportionately affects Black communities and systemic injustices continue to put Black transgender women and other Black LGBTQ+ people at risk of facing police violence. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 2021 has become the worst year in recent history for anti-LGBTQ legislation sweeping across state legislatures in the United States. These bills vary from banning transgender girls from participating in sports to banning LGBTQ+ people from serving on school boards to making it a felony to provide transgender youth with...

The Nigerian Government has the power to completely suppress freedom of speech by arresting and jailing journalists, activist and protesters, as well as by also controlling the internet. As a global community, we call on the Nigerian Government led by President Mohammed Buhari to end his dictatorship and lift the ban on Twitter in Nigeria. We call on him to withdraw the threat to prosecute people using Twitter, as there is no stipulation in the Nigerian law to this effect. The Nigerian government officially put an indefinite ban on Twitter on 5 June 2021, restricting it from operating in Nigeria. This came...

Donna Hylton is a Jamaican-American author and criminal justice activist. She founded, A Little Piece of Light, the non-profit, which bears the same name as her book, both created out of her lived experience of 27 years of incarceration. Ms. Hylton pulled off a fantastic event in the community of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Since her release, she has been a staunch advocate for the rights of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, cis, trans, and those who hold fluid identities. Her work and dedication to this cause have led her to speak at the Women’s March in 2017, the Democratic National...

25 May is our Founder V's (formerly Eve Ensler) birthday. This birthday please support the NEW Artist Solidarity Fund for individual artists who are courageously rising with their plays, poems, paintings, novels, music in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, fascism, oppression and occupation and violence in places like Palestine and Myanmar where they are most needed. We need their voices now more than ever. We need their energy, inspiration, vision and magic. And they need our support more than ever so that we have ways of making meaning out of the chaos and struggle that defines these days.   Your donation...

The rapid spread of coronavirus across the globe has revealed what has always been a glaring truth for so many of the essential workers who are the backbone of our society: inequity. From the people who pick our food to the people who deliver our packages, it is the working class and poor who are most vulnerable to the virus and the economic disaster that COVID-19 has laid bare. So often these frontline workers are women. Many of them are activists, young leaders, and women who are part of our movement. In response to these increasing needs, V-Day launched the RISING...

We were so hopeful and excited about the vaccines being administered out here in the free world. This meant that we were somewhat protected from this deadly virus that had taken the lives of too many precious souls. The women at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility were just as excited because they were finally allowed to sign up to get vaccinations. The visiting room was estimated to be opening up at the end of April, so women would see their children and family again, after a year of no visiting. Some of the older women and those that have pre-existing...

Around the world, activists have heard the call to action of One Billion RISING GARDENS, a global grassroots call for revival, restoration and transformation, making the connection between violence against women and destruction of the earth. RISING GARDENS participants are highlighting the convergence of women’s inequality and food insecurity, land ownership, healthcare access, and the impacts of the fossil fuel industry on frontline and marginalized communities....
