V TO THE TENTH SUPERLOVE PARADE

Saturday’s festivities kick off with a V TO THE TENTH SUPERLOVE PARADE lead by women of New Orleans and the Gulf South and Dr. Denis Mukwege from the Panzi Hospital in Congo. The starting point will be Congo Square (the place where Jazz began and a site where slaves would historically gather to preserve their culture) and the procession, with African drumming, will lead to SUPERLOVE. The parade is about the right to return, as many of the women of the Diaspora participating in the parade were thrown out of public housing, while others left New Orleans during and after the storm and have never returned.

A procession of 250 local New Orleans girls and their female leaders will enter the Superdome to begin the girls’ portion of the morning’s activities.

Eve Ensler will then usher in a new generation of V-Girls with opening remarks. Eve will be joined by young activists, including Danijela Dugandzic from Bosnia and Sandra Ljubinkovic from Belgrade, and Elan Stahl, Hannah Levinson, and Megan Reback from New York.
DAUGHTERS OF HOPE RITES OF PASSAGE CEREMONY

A beautiful Rite of Passage/Initiation into V-Day Ceremony will then take place for 250 local girls from the LifeShop program, lead by Carol Bebelle and Asia Rainey. Nancy Redd, author of Body Drama, will present each of the girls with a copy of her book and a gift of an additional book will be given by First Books.

What Girls Know, in collaboration with the Contemporary Arts Center, presents an excerpt from IN OUR BONES, an original play created by teenage girls from New Orleans parishes. Partnering with What Girls Know is Zion Trinity, who bring the music, rhythm and soul of African countries to the telling of the girls' story. Zion Trinity will lead the girls in a warrior chant of the Yoruba people from Nigeria. The chant teaches us to how to reclaim a fighting spirit from the devilish delusion of "I Just Don't Care", how to cut through our own defeatism and escort in the light of healing and life force. .

Eve Ensler and Ann Veneman, Executive Director of UNICEF, will welcome Christine Schuler Deschryver and Dr. Denis Mukwege, Congolese activists. Together, they will formally launch V-Day’s 2009 Spotlight Campaign on the Women and Girls of the Congo.
